Like so many, this movie was more or less my introduction to the wonders and joys of Asian cinema and it's still a great one, as well as Zhang Ziyi's finest performance.

I adore this movie. The action is great, and the grace of the art is phenomenal, the cinematography is stunning, but the true joy of this movie is the unrequitted love of Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien. So powerful it overshadows everything else in the movie.

Wow, you're right, its almost formulamatic when you put it that way. Lust, Caution is coming in the next few weeks. I really enjoyed that one too. I couldn't agree more about the older romance in this movie, its so mature, even by todays standards. You don't see a reserved love like that in our societies nowadays, everyone is so impulsive. Thanks for the comment!

I'd forgotten how much I liked this movie when I saw it last time. I like Ang Lee's other movies as well. I've only seen Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution. Both these and Crouchin Tiger, Hidden Dargon seem to be about love that faces a massive amount of troubles. In all three movies one main character dies as well.

I thought the action sequences worked well in the movie but what I most liked about this movie is the chemistry between Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien. The young couple seemed rather boring compared to them.
