This was a cool mix of music and period piece for me. At first I thought it was a lame idea, but after watching it for a few episodes, I really got into it. The only thing I didn't like was the whole Sunflower smelling Guy and must find him thing.

Great review- I agree with all of your points. While the lesser attention to character and backstory was a little frustrating, the sleek fight scenes and superior animation made it worth it. I got the soundtrack right after watching- it's so good! And even though the historical anachronisms/inaccuracies are plentiful, it really does a good job of recreating the spirit and atmosphere of the time period. I was taking a class on Edo Period Japan when I watched the series, and I remember being excited about various references and time-appropriate themes.

It sounds like you like Samurai Champloo for almost exactly the same reasons I did (and expressed it better than I could). I remember being similarly unsure about the "Bassball Blues" episode because they seemed to hit just about every American stereotype there is. I wasn't sure if I should be offended or just laugh out loud at the absurdity of it.

I also found it fascinating how this show handles Japan's relationship to Christianity at that time. Not only did it remind me of how my fellow Christians have screwed the pooch with our ministry methods in the past but also how there are still many many people today that will take up a front of religion in order to exploit people.

Needless to say, I really enjoyed this series.

lol I liked Bebop better, so I guess I was a bit harsh on the rating, but I hope you know I thought this anime kicked all kinds of ass! Congrats on your first anime purchase, I think its worthy...and I bootleg a helluva lot!

Regarding the Baseball Episode" "This is something that bothered me quite a bit."

This was one of my favorite episodes of anime that I ever watched. Personally, I love how they make fun of us Westerners.

What liked most about Samurai Champloo was that is involved:

-Samurai
-Really good animation. I especially liked this style of animation (it is kind of like the animation found in Afro Samurai)
-Hip Hop (the shit that bring money out of zip locks)
-Feudal Japan

This anime was sofa king awesome that I realize I need to yet again change my top ten. I also now plan on buying this anime, and it will be my first anime related purchase.

That AMV ruled because the animation matched the song perfect, and I like Gangstarr, and that song, and Samurai Champloo. God the fighting was sick in that show.
