Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis moves like a hyperactive, Speedy Gonzalez hopped up on rocket-fuel. The jokes are low-brow, ludicrous, & funny, yet the gore is magnificent and plentiful. The story is about a girl of some wealthy man being kidnapped and being held for ransom. If the bad guys don’t get their money they are going to rape her. Not only that, but the Sars virus has landed on Thailand, the only place that has been free of the virus. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this one yet on CNN, but this is the version that turns humans into evil vampiric looking zombies. So yeah, watch out!
Sars has transformed everyone on the plant in a zombie. The earth’s last chance of survival lies within a few teenagers and an old dude armed with a light-saber, very much like a jedi. From the light saber duel with a giant snake, to the zombie baby attack, it is non-stop action from start to finish. This is definitely a fun movie to watch with friends. Obviously the production values stink, and yes, it has its stupid moments and some of the CGI effects do not meet the highest of standards, but that’s OK.
I’ve seen a great number of silly slapstick comedies from the East, mainly Hong Kong, and loved them, but I have to say this is easily one of the funniest comedies I have ever seen. Sars Wars is the very definition of a mixed bag. Most of the movie is very fun, but a few scenes seemed longer than necessary for me. I have reviewed these crazy asian zombie movies for months now and if you have been following along with me you should expect the expected at this point. If you honestly haven’t had enough East Asian zombie comedies, than you should probably give Sars Wars a shot.
The reason this film is able to be what it is, and get away with it, is that it doesnt try to take itself seriously what so ever. The comedy angle will probably be, at times, rather puzzling for Western viewers but it compliments the film’s more serious horror elements quite nicely. Sars wars starts strong and never lets up. However, like most zombie films, it should be remembered that it has been made for the adolescent boy in all of us, and focuses on zombies, blood, and hot women. Add to that a couple of animation sequences that put those in Kill Bill to shame, and you’ve got one hell of a movie here.
