I'm sort of amazed at the few people I wander across who found something to like in this film. I can't recall a worse film that I've seen. Check my review here: http://www.jgeeks.com/?p=1168

This movie is an absolute let down by director Mamoru Oshii. As far as I love all of his anime work, and even if I actually liked Avalon pretty much, this one is quite rubbish. Amateurish in direction, badly acted, it contains all of the Oshii trademarks (snipe rifles, airplanes, the avalon game) without pouring really anything new in the mix. Sure, there's plenty of reference from Kurosawa and even Leone movies, but it really is more visual than anything else. But what really surprised me is the direction and editing. Really: amateurish at best. Looks a lot more like a fan film than a professional opera. Let's hope for the next one.

OMFG...WTF...Really? I just finished watching this film and I am so mad at myself right now. Not only did I just waste 19 dollars on it, but 70 minutes of my life just got wisked away for nothing. You know I will never get that time back. Do you think I can get a refund on that 70 minutes of my life?!?!?

whose this reviewer? I think that he should be punsished by having to watch this film over and over until he realizes how terrible it actually was. Long story short. Do not buy this movie. Borrow from it and accidently scratch the dvd before you give it back...your friend will thank you.

Long drawn out sequences with vague or no point at all, terrible audio..I had no idea what they were saying for about half the movie. On a good note, the visuals were nice and the actors (female) at least nice to look at. This movie did have potential however, it failed miserably to deliver. A remake with a more compotent writer might make all the difference here.

@darren, I think you missed the point. It's not paced like your typical American style action flick, but it has it's own kind of charm. Maybe you've been watching too much Bruce Willis ;-)

the cg work is top notch? are you serious?

an action film not about repetition and boredom? That's exactly what this film is...long moments of characters walking for minutes and repetitive action...

I can't see how anyone can take you seriously as a reviewer

Yeah, we pretty much share the same opinion on this. About the ending, since I don't understand Japanese: after they defeated the End Boss the girls leave poor Jager to back by foot (since he can't affords vehicles) so he shoots them down? Did I get it right?

I actually thought it was a pretty funny ending, all taken into consideration.

Sounds like you might have liked this one a little bit more than I did. I wonder if the other shorts build more into this story or something but I'm even more interested to see Avalon. Love how you mention the Engrish! I couldn't have been more insane than the moments where I'm cranking up volume to try and understand what the hell everyone was saying.
