In a partnership that does nothing if not melt my brain, director, John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2) will write and direct the big screen adaptation of Totoro for Pixar Animation Studios. It will be another collaboration between Pixar and Disney since Toy Story 3 featured a Totoro plush in the films ending. The film is set for Christmas of 2011 and will be produced by animation Golden Boy, Brad Bird (The Incredibles).

Rumors were running wild after the two companies joined forces that Pixar had their eye on My Neighbor Totoro but Lasseter insisted he was still attached to the project. Seems they were both telling the truth. In a statement issued early this morning, he had this to say: “I’ve had a passionate vision for Totoro in my head for years, and now I have the greatest studio in the world helping me make it a reality.” When asked about his thoughts, creator, Hayao Miyazaki added, “I couldn’t be happier with Pixar teaming up with Disney. This one is going to be special!“

This is obviously a huge dagger into the hearts of fans hoping Cars 2 would be the next big film from Pixar. We’ll keep you updated as soon as voice actors and plot details are revealed.

    They should have said Christmas 2012 or 2013…. this isn’t even funny though. If anyone ever touches Totoro I’d go to the Pixar studio myself and strangle everybody =)

    This was terrific fun. I just spied it before heading off to sleep, and I hadn’t even thought of a good April Fools prank. You probably should have made the date 2013 and used some of the other paintings from the Totoro Forest Project (as “pre-production artwork”), but overall this was a great gag and proved to be very popular at The Ghibli Blog. Thanks a lot!

    PIXER [TOTORO] is a lie of “April Fool’s Day”.
    [STUDIO GHIBLI] [PIXER] is not announced at all in SITE either.

    I grew up watching the Original Totoro… My family and I just got the DVD version, which is like some sort of Disney remake, and they ruined it. Now by making this theyre ruining it more. Gee, Thanks Disney.
