Ginny McQueen grew up being that weird punk girl who played bass guitar and never showed up to school. She started along her geek ways when she began watching Sailor Moon at the age of 13. After that it just snowballed into making her the big geek she is today. She’s been cosplaying since 1998, winning 18 costuming awards, and is part of the Cosplay4aCause calendar charity event. Read below as I grill her on a variety of questions…
Having been home schooled, starting college early and already married, it seems your life has always been in the fast lane. Do you approach cosplay with this same ‘head-on’ mentality?
Ginny: Because I had to move out on my own and completely take care of myself at 17 years old, I had to grow up very fast. Plus I never experienced things like cliques and popularity wars in high school, so to this day it still makes no sense to me. I think cosplay was a great thing for me because it allowed me to have a fun and creative outlet while dealing with so much crazy stuff.
You look amazing in the Cosplay 4 A Cause calendar. Tell us what it means to you to be apart of such a great project, that benefits such a noble cause!
Ginny: Thanks! I was thrilled when asked to be a part of it. I’ve been to Japan many times and have friends there. The Japanese have such a unique influence on entertainment and pop culture, I was glad to be able to do something that celebrates that.
You just got back from San Deigo Comic Con, how was it? Also, we hope you didn’t have any trouble in the California traffic!
Ginny: I had a great time. Comic Con is so different from other conventions, but it’s still all about the people you are with when you are there. Conventions have always been about being around good people. And I made it to and from Las Vegas faster than those coming to and from Los Angeles!

What are the best things about being involved in cosplay and making cosplay costumes?
Ginny: For me, I’ve made so many friends and connections because of it. I’ve traveled all over the world just because I like making and dressing up in silly costumes! I never imagined when I started this hobby that so much would come from it.
Is there any downside to cosplay for you?
Ginny: Being a public figure in any community is going to make you a target for some crazy stuff. Sometimes I feel like I get as many crazy things happening to me as actors do, but at least they get paid! I don’t get paid to cosplay, it’s just my hobby. I think I should make money off of it if I’m going to put up with people stalking me and causing me problems [laughs]!

I know you are a big fan of Anime, can you give us any of your favorites?
Ginny: Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite. I also love The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Kodomo no Omocha, and my first favorite Sailor Moon. Oh, and Miyazaki films. Totoro!
Are you more attracted to the extensive, complicated costumes or the simple costumes, such as Nuku Nuku?

Ginny: It depends. I like a challenge, but simple and comfortable costumes are much more enjoyable to wear around conventions.
Lastly, any advice for any cosplayer looking to take their craft to the next level?
Ginny: I’ve always learned by doing. I would say don’t let something intimidate you just because you’ve never done it before. There are so many cosplayers that are willing to give advice and answer questions if you get stuck. I would also say that no matter what, be sure you are having fun. This is a hobby, and a very expensive one at that. So make sure you don’t take it too seriously and have a good time!
