Wow, can you blantently rip-off another film and get away with it on this scale? Legend of a Rabbit is very reminiscent of Kung-Fu Panda. Almost the same storyline but a lot more dull and boring. Even a $12 million budget and a campaign stating more cultural authenticity and action than Kung Fu Panda, the China-produced 3D animation Legend of a Rabbit is a mess. To sum it up, in terms of techniques and details, it lacks a good storytelling technique. The mistaken identity ploy, for one, drags and delays the climactic duels for too long.
Before I continue, I suppose I should tell you the plot. Well, it follows a dying Sifu, who flees from the Imperial City to a small village. He’s being hunted and is on his last dying breathe. He is found by a humble farmhouse cook named Tu who, at the request of the dying Sifu, must return a very important Kung Fu Academy Tablet to the Sifu’s daughter Moli in the imperial city. Tu made a simple promise that turns out to change his life forever. Never having been to the city, Tu already got off to a dangerous start. He finds the Kung Fu Academy but finds that it has already been taken over by a ruthless panda named Slash. The old master (Sifu) and his daughter has gone missing. But to keep to his promise, Tu has no choice but to stay in the Academy to wait for their return. He’s bullied from day one for knowing no Kung Fu. But serving as a cook there, he picks up some Kung Fu as the days go by.
The rest of the story tells of his journey to find Peony and how he bumbles and stumbles in his quest to fulfill his promise. Along the way, he endures being bullied by Slash’s minions, discovers the hidden power within himself and finally defeats Slash in a big showdown. You don’t need to be a martial arts expert to see where the story is headed. A recent interview with the voice cast of the movie states that the comparison of this movie with Kung Fu Panda is inevitable. It also mean that this movie is as good as the latter having been compared to it. I have a gut feeling that audience will feel cheated should they believe that statement.
To sum it up, once more, the plot was rather simple and straight forward which is boring in a way. The element / character in the movie looks familiar. The movie last for approx 90 minute which is not too short nor too long, but I also notice that there were quite a number of unnecessary and draggy scene which was intended to make the audience laugh but ended up quite annoying. An unoriginal, messy, waste of time, waste of money film that hopefully I can forget as fast as I watched it. Avoid.
