If 70% of all sex toys are manufactured in China, why did it take so long for a comedy film about Chinese sex toys to get made? Pervs keep in mind, there is no skin on display as you will instead see Shunzi trying to stick a dildo onto his forehead to amuse Lili than it being used for any other purpose. Chinese comedy ‘Red Light Revolution’, is a light hearted look at the bumbling attempts of Shunzi, and his foray into running an adult shop in his Beijing neighborhood. The film highlights the clash between the old communist and the new capitalist China, where nothing is off limits in the quest to make money.
Directed by an Australian who currently resides in Beijing, it certainly embraces Chinese themes but has a distinctive Western feel. Shot in Mandarin, it appears to be Voutas’s attempt to create a Judd Apatow-style gross-out comedy. Not surprisingly, Voutas’s inept movie has yet to find a Chinese distributor. After all, it is about a luckless Beijinger who opens an adult shop to make ends meet, sparking a sexual revolution in his conservative neighborhood. China is known to be very strict when it comes to sexual material so this film is a bit of a taboo, even if it falls within the comedy realm.
Honestly, it’s great to see that sex industry can be looked at in both an insightful and humorous way. Every opportunity is taken to parody and reference China’s confusing legislation, from how to apply for a Sex Shop Permit, to his family giving him strange looks. It is a sex comedy that also plays politics with a look at life behind the red curtain in the new China. Seriously, after viewing the film it left me wondering why we still make such a big deal about sex. The jokes are inoffensive to the point of being harmless and it ducks showing anything too risqué. Shunzi’s innocent character keeps the story from sliding into puerile sex farce.
Truely, what a surprising film Red Light Revolution turned out to be displaying such likeable characters. The film spreads the comedy out over many styles, and the more experienced you are at life, the more you will get out of this film. It also addresses some interesting facts, for instance, there are over 2000 sex shops in Beijing alone and over 10,000 sex toy companies producing 1.3 trillion condoms per year. So that in itself, this film earns accolades for just being made. There are hints of gut busting humor, but more so it is just an interesting ride into a world that is considered on the hush.
