The glamtastic and super-sexy electro-pop-punk outfit consists of vocalist Kaila Yu, bassist Katt Lee, drummer Jamie Scoles, lead guitarist Kiki Wongo, and keyboardist Yuki Ito. Not only are these ladies stunningly beautiful, but they rock with the best of them. Japan Cinema had a chance to catch up with the ladies as they attended AniMegaCon last month and got the drop on upcoming projects, fashion, and of course, anime! Read below for the full interview…
You girls recently performed at ANIMEGACON. Obviously you are inspired by Japanese pop music, but do you also like anime?
Jamie: I’m definitely a big fan of anime. All of Miyazaki’s work and Fullmetal Alchemist are my all-time favorites!
Kiki: I LOVE TOTORO!!!!
Yuki: I LOVE ANIME! I really enjoy attending to anime conventions and seeing all the different cosplays. I’m a huge fan of Sailor Moon, Chobits, Fullmetal Alchemist, Highschool of the Dead, Final Fantasy, and much more. <3
Katt: I’m watching K-on right now, my favorite anime so far! It’s about an all girl rock band
How is performing at anime conventions different than performing regular concerts?
Jamie: The crowds are always way more energetic it seems!
Kiki: The fans at anime conventions are very interactive! I also personally love scoping out all the cool merchandise and art
Yuki: They are way more energetic and fun to talk to! It’s such an amazing feeling to see them enjoy and interacting during our performance.
Kaila: Our goal was always to develop our own unique sound. We didnt want to follow what was popular and just go with the trends. We wanted to remain true to our personal musical influences: which are very eclectic! Its all about the music!
Katt: We never felt like we had to fill a certain niche of music but rather we create whatever feels good for us, hopefully everybody will appreciate what we do:)
You guys played a few gigs on tour. Got any crazy stories?
Kiki: [The] last time we went on tour, I woke up on a lawn chair by the hotel pool with a bottle of beer, my cell phone, and a tazer in hand at 8 am…that was an interesting night!
Katt: [Laughs hard] I remember Kiki walking into the hotel room while I was getting up wondering what happened to her!
With so many women being ‘paint by number’ pop artists in music nowadays. How is Nylon pink breaking the stereotype and promoting femininity?
Kaila: I think that #1 we aren’t a pre-packaged band, we came together on our own. We play our own instruments, all the girls are real musicians and we write our own music. As artists, I really believe that its important to write your own music!
Being that fashion changes as often as the seasons. What is in style right now? What kind of fashion are you guys feeling while performing on stage?
Jamie: We all kind of have our own styles that reflect our personalities which I think is really cool because we all get to have our own little edge in our outfits.
Katt: We definitely have our own distinct style that remains constant throughout all of the different fashions that we have worn. Right now we into a lot of color, prints and a more playful look rather than so dark and serious.
Nylon Pink uses music to help out kids and charities. What kind of causes do you feel passionate about?
Kaila: Human trafficking is definitely a cause that we are passionate about.
When performing a cover, how do you girls approach the music from a creative standpoint. I know you have to make it your own version while keeping the integrity of the original song. How hard is this for your band?
Kiki: We love making our own versions of cover songs because it allows us to embellish our own personal flare in songs that we already love and respect musically. Most of us have very distinct musical influences, so it actually comes very naturally for us to collectively mold our own styles into the structure of the original song.
What can you tell us about your new single ‘Heart Attack’? What kind of energy were you going for?
Kaila: Kiki wrote Heart Attack, its a midtempo, dreamy edgy rock song. Most similarly I think it has some sounds that are similar to those of the Sleigh Bells
Kiki: Exactly! We wanted the song to hit hard, but still represent our feminine side
Lastly, what does Nylon Pink have in store fro the rest of 2012/early 2013?
Kaila: Its going to be a big year! We will continue to release many cover songs, we have new music videos coming out — an epic music video called THE NEW BLACK, a winter US tour and a spring JAPAN/ASIA tour!
