A few months ago we reviewed Berserk Arc I but have recently received the DVD and would love to give our readers the opportunity to know if you should make the jump to owning this great anime film on home video.
You can read our review of the film: here
The transfer seems pretty faithful to the source material. The 2.35:1 anamorphic DVD holds up colors which are an even match but detail is obviously lower and banding is if anything slightly more of a problem than its high def counterpart. The biggest misconception people have about animated films is that they doubt you’re gaining much extra detail in the leap between 720p to 1080p. Contrast & brightness levels are naturalistic and looks very detailed and vivid.
The main blow could be the lack of supplements. No extras except some concept art, which is a nice peek at the phases of production. Visual artists like myself will be very pleased to get an inside peak at material like this. Sadly, there is no commentary, which I would have loved to hear. Either way I’m excited to see the next two parts in the trilogy and how they take advantage of the supplements. Viz has done a great job tranfering this film and making a faithful adaptation for fans. We recommend you pick up the DVD.
