Of all the long-haired ghost girl Asian films populating my DVD shelf, Arang is definitely one of the more interesting and fresh. This film has it's supernatural overtones but is really a thriller-murder mystery and, in my opinion, a very good one. Check out my full review to see if Arang has what it takes to lift the ghost horror genre up from the gutter...
My personal vote for the best asian horror "slasher" of the year, it rarely ventures into cheesy drama, or false shocks. I felt as if I was watching Asia's version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The kills are satisfying, but towards the end the violence goes over the edge to a point of no return. Click to read if you agree, in my full review...
The Japanese rarely seem to make a simple film. Horrors of Malformed Men is also very complex, even to the point of being convoluted. Along with the complex storyline, there is plenty of bizarre and twisted imagery. It is also an original and unique horror film, even more so that it was made in 1969. Click to read my full review...
Korean horror has focused on some ridiculous subjects over the last few years but Yoga Hakwon seems to take the cake. After finding this movie on a streaming site, I decided that I should give it a shot. Unique plot aside the real question is if YOU should check it out. Yoga Hakwon uses slow-building tension for effectiveness. Click to read full review...
Not a boring Buddhist thriller, Saranyoo Jiralak's debut feature 9 Wat starts off with a bang. Even with the toned-down sexploitation factor and the relative incoherence of the plot, 9 Wat should connect with an audience looking for a fun and original Asian horror movie. The perfect blend of gore, sexuality, and intelligent script writing, I thoroughly enjoyed this film...
Horror week wraps up and I saved the worst for last! Meatball Machine is not for anyone who has no interest in campy or cult movies, but if cult flicks are up your ally, and crazy mutant parasite aliens taking over human bodies, and then eating each other is your bag...then by all means. Gore, blood, violence, and everything bizarre is included. Click to read the full review!
I wrap up the horror trilogy today with Art of the Devil III. Without a main hero, it is difficult to appreciate this film like other horror films in which there is a protagonist for us to connect with. The scare factor is taken down a notch, only because if you’ve watched the first film, you pretty much know and waiting to see how this one will end...
Horror week continues here at Japan Cinema as I review Art of the Devil II. This is probabaly the second or third best horror movie out of Thailand. It’s hardly the most original of plots but it’s a well-worn formula that works effectively enough. After all, how much plot do you expect from a horror movie? A rare case where the sequel triumphs the original...
Japan Cinema kicks off Horror Week! Art of the Devil was a rather engaging film overall. Gorehounds will eat this film up because it shares their appetite for destruction yet it actually has a coherent plot. Though as you know a single scene of torture cant really sustain a story. Luckily there is enough of one here to pull it together...
Put the kids to bed because Meat Grinder is an extreme cult Asian horror flick filled with killing spree's with such determination that it becomes more chilling then most horror films. Our lead is a female psychopath who grinds her victims into meatballs for noodle soup and eventually, for consumption. Is the film just as tasty as her soup? Click to find out in our full review...
